It could have been because I hadn’t eaten in about ten hours, but the food from Giovanni’s Italian Restaurant exceeded my expectations. Granted my expectations typically aren’t very high for a pizza delivery place recommended by the hotel front desk, but the Giovanni’s location in the Kearny Mesa-area of San Diego really delivered (pun intended). First, I appreciated that they provided silverware, plates, cups, and napkins knowing that I was in a hotel room and, therefore, didn’t have any of that. Plus, their delivery was very timely even though I’m sure they were busy with it being the first Thursday night football game of the season. Finally, getting to their food, I began with their Neapolitan Bruschetta and really enjoyed it. It starts with garlic bread and is then topped with diced tomatoes, basil, olive oil, garlic, and parmesan cheese. I particularly enjoyed how the small pieces of garlic mixed with the parmesan cheese to form patches of gooey goodness for the taste buds.
The pizza from Giovanni’s was probably better than it looks as it had more flavor than its plain appearance lets on. It was nice and greasy with plenty of cheese despite me not even ordering extra cheese, and I also really liked the large chunks of sausage on it. The crust was simple, but it was fairly soft which made it decent to eat by itself. Perhaps my favorite thing about this pizza is that it reminded me of pizza back in my home of the Midwest, and it wasn’t at all frufru like same California pizzerias can be. Overall, the fresh, lightness of the bruschetta was a nice compliment to the greasy, heavier pizza. I am happy to recommend delivery from Giovanni’s Italian Restaurant to anyone who is in the area, and I believe they also have a good amount of space for dining in as well.
