Gulfport, Mississippi is still rebuilding in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and Tony’s Brick Oven Pizzeria opened there in 2010 joining in on Gulfport’s Historic Downtown Renovation Project. Tony’s offers a fun dining atmosphere where you can actually see the process of your pizza being made – from the dough being tossed to it cooking in the oven – right from your table. You can see their preparation area and brick oven in the back of my picture of the restaurant’s interior below.
I split a pizza that was half The Perfect Cheese and half The Perfect Pepperoni (which is just The Perfect Cheese with pepperoni). I think my favorite part about the pizza was their rich four cheese blend of mozzarella, provolone, romano, and parmesan. I was also impressed with the crust that was very uniform all around for a hand tossed pizza, and it was solid enough to hold the pizza together but not too crispy on the edges. Tony’s marinara sauce was pretty good as well, but I think there may have been slightly too much on my pizza as I would have preferred for the taste of the cheese to stand out a little more. Overall, I think Tony’s Brick Oven Pizzeria is a great option for pizza in Gulfport for locals and tourists alike, and it may be especially convenient for vacationers as it is just blocks from the beach.
