Pizza Port is a really cool pizzeria and brewery with multiple locations in the San Diego area. It actually started as a pizza place and craft-brewed beers were added a little later, after one of the owners had success when dabbling in home brewing. Don’t let that fool you into thinking their beers are just an afterthought though. They are very good, and Pizza Port has won several medals for them. I dined at their Carlsbad location which also happens to have a bottle shop featuring over 600 additional craft beers.
The Pizza Port in Carlsbad is very popular and was packed when I ate there on a Wednesday evening. I’m sure its location in downtown Carlsbad, not far from the beach, has at least a little bit to do with its draw. Besides the bottle shop, this Pizza Port also has some patio seating and a beer garden-type area. The only negatives about this location is that it can be tough to find parking and then even tougher to find a seat in the dining room.
Besides pizza and beer, Pizza Port also serves some appetizers and wings. I tried their cheese sticks which were okay but nothing too special. Following the cheese sticks were samplings of three different pizzas; Meet Extreme Meat, Freshy Margherita Classic, and Pizza Solona. All of the pizzas had a good crust that was light and doughy with some slight saltiness. While I liked their standard crust, I did regret not noticing that they also offer a wholegrain beer crust until it was too late.
My favorite pizza of the three was probably the Meet Extreme Meat. Its meats were flavorful and there were plenty of them. I also enjoyed the Freshy Margherita Classic which I ordered with olive oil (the other option is a light spread of their marinara). The only thing I did not like about this pizza was its crust-to-toppings ratio. I felt that the crust dominated too much of the circumference of the pizza, and I would have liked it better had the olive oil, cheese, tomatoes, and basil made it closer to the edge of the pizza. The Pizza Solona is not one I personally ordered, and I knew it wasn’t really my typical pizza preference. It wasn’t bad, but I felt that it tasted more like a seafood/vegetable medley than a pizza. For what its worth, the shrimp and clams were pretty good if you enjoy that type of food as a pizza topping.
If good pizza and good beer are your thing, then I definitely recommend any of the Pizza Port locations. If not, then just what the heck is your thing?!
