The Original Impellizzeri’s Pizza Review | Louisville, KY

The Original Impellizzeri’s Pizza was started in 1979, and they now have three locations in Louisville.  I ate at their Highlands location on Bardstown Road which is the site of their first restaurant, so I guess you could say that I was lucky enough to eat at the original Original Impellizzeri’s Pizza.  They serve a full menu of Italian inspired dishes from appetizers to salads to hoagie sandwiches and pasta dishes using their own family recipes, and, in a very rare occurrence, my favorite thing about my meal was not the pizza.  I realize it is near blasphemy for The Pizza Fan to say this, but I think you will understand where I am coming from when you look at the picture of Impellizzeri’s breadsticks below:

Can you see the pool of delicious butter the breadsticks are sitting in?!  Impellizzeri’s breadsticks are made from their homemade dough and smothered with their own garlic butter.  I will try not to digress too much though and get to their pizza which was pretty good as well.  Impellizzeri’s pizzas have a good sauce, tasty toppings, and some nice seasoning on top.  It is hard to tell in the picture, but the far half of my pizza was actually their meats combo with pepperoni, Italian sausage, ham, bacon, Canadian bacon, and meatballs.  I preferred this over the half with just pepperoni as their pizzas have a lot of sauce, and I found more toppings to work well to balance that out.  Impellizzeri’s offers thin crust, original crust, and Sicilian deep-dish.  I didn’t have time for the Sicilian deep-dish as it takes at least forty-five minutes to bake, but I would very much like to try that if I make it back.  I think The Original Impellizzeri’s Pizza is a great place to get a taste of Louisville pizza (as well as delicious breadsticks).

Looks real good. When I was in Louisville, I went to the garage bar. Wow, it was bad.
